10 jobs for people who love to write
I love writing. It's something that I enjoy doing for fun, and I have always enjoyed writing for work as well, both in this business and my previous business. Writing is something I feel confident in doing. I know that all throughout my future, no matter what type of job I find myself working, I will always want to be writing. Writing for fun and writing professionally are both fundamental to who I am as a person. I have managed to find some great professions that have supported this love of mine, and I'd love to share some of my ideas for you.
1) Blog writing or content writing:
While personal blogs seem to be something that was left in the 2010s in favour of social media, businesses and media organisations are still constantly writing blogs. Blogs are great for a variety of reasons. They provide long form content for readers and customers, they provide the opportunity for the business or organisation to connect with readers on a personal and emotional level, and they can provide invaluable information to readers. In addition to the general benefits of longer-form blog writing, blogs are also an important part of being found on Google. Google loves content, customers love content, and having great blog content on your website is excellent for bringing traffic to your webiste via Google search. Blog writing is a great job for someone who loves writing. It's one of my favourite parts of running my business. Blog writing gives the writer the opportunity to share information, personal stories, and great longer-form content with the reader. You can find jobs as a blog writer or content writer with marketing agencies, or you can offer your services as a freelancer to business owners. It's a great idea to learn some more about marketing before starting this career path so you can offer more services to your potential clients, and also improve job prospects with marketing agencies
2) Copywriter:
I have sometimes dreamt of a career as a copywriter. To be a copywriter, you need to be able to write content that resonates with customers and clients and encourages them to make a purchase. Being a copywriter is a great option as there are many businesses, especially large companies, who are looking for copywriters to create excellent copy for their websites and marketing material. Being a copywriter you can either work as a freelancer, finding individual clients, or you could work for an agency, or even for a large business. Unfortunately for us writers, some copywriters are finding that the interest in their businesses are decreasing due to AI systems like ChatGPT. However, if you've ever used Chat GPT, or read anything written by it, you will see that the writing is formulaic, boring, and lacks the necessary emotion that is needed for good copy. So good copywriters won't be replaced fully any time soon, it is just becoming a little more niche. Still there are copywriting positions advertised and freelance copywriters who are selling their services.
3) Journalist:
Journalism is a crucial and underrated career. A journalist has the incredibly important job of sharing important news, stories, and current affairs with the world. One of the great things about journalism is that you can specialise in one of many different areas. There are local news journalists focusing on local events, political journalists, sports journalists, as well as specialists like international war journalists. Each of these specialties are unique and can make a real difference to the lives of everyday people. As a journalist, one of the main parts of your job is to write. Writing articles for newspapers and writing online news content is what journalists do every day. You can find your perfect journalism position anywhere from your local newspaper to a major international media organisation. Even with the advent of AI, journalists are still needed and still important to our society, making journalism the perfect job for someone who loves to write.
4) Screenwriter:
Who wouldn't love to write their own movie or television show? To be a screenwriter you need to be able to write creatively. You need to be able to take someone else's ideas, or your own, and create a full script that includes detail, nuance, and creativity. One of the magical things about screenwriting is that you get the unique opportunity to see your writing brought to life by actors. You get to hear the dialogue you create played out on the screen, and see the actions of your characters carried out by professional actors. Just imagine turning on the TV and seeing something you wrote playing on screen! Screenwriting is a competitive industry, but sounds like one of the most rewarding and lucrative careers for someone who loves writing.
5) Public Relations:
Being a PR officer involves writing a whole lot of press releases, articles, and content about your client or employer to improve their public image. Public relations officers are hired across a variety of industries, including by celebrities, politicians, and companies. Work is available as a freelancer or directly through an employer. Every day involves the opportunity to write media releases, prepare speeches, create content for social media, and write to media organisations. It's a unique and wonderful way to write every day.
6) Editor:
Being an editor is great for anyone who loves the technical side of writing. If you love reading content, and turning it from something boring to something magical, editing is for you. Being an editor is great for those who also love to read. Imagine getting to read books, online content, and news articles prior to everyone else, and be a part of the process of getting it ready for publishing. And editing isn't just proof reading and fixing errors, it's also about giving input on writing style, content, and creating a unique voice. There are editing positions across a variety of industries, including marketing, publishing, and journalism.
7) Technical writer:
Being a technical writer means being an expert in one area, and being able to convey that information to a wide variety of people, including those with limited knowledge. Technical writing can include creating items such as instructions manuals, policies and procedures, and online content. As a technical writer, you will need an area of expertise, and find work within that niche. Everyone always thinks of social media being very visual. However, the writing element of social media is also very important. Businesses are constantly looking for social media managers and this is an area that is experiencing exponential growth at the moment.
